Our hope is Living Hope

READ: Ezekiel 45,46; Psalms 145; 1 Peter 1

SCRIPTURE: 1 Peter 1: 3 Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,
4 and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade. This inheritance is kept in heaven for you

OBSERVATION: We often hear people say that “hope is life; without hope, nobody can live in this world.” Without any assurance, people want and expect something to happen or be true. But, biblical hope is different from the meaning or idea of hope that we hear from the world. While worldly hope is “an uncertain good,” Biblical hope is, as John Blanchard says, “an unconditional certainty.” John MacArthur writes, “Hope is synonymous with the Christian faith because the motive for believers’ embracing Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior is their anticipation of escaping hell and entering eternal glory.” In the first epistle of Apostle Peter, hope is a significant theme that he reminds the suffering Christians. Some scholars call 1 Peter is a letter of hope. Here, Peter speaks about the living hope of every Christian who is born again. Our salvation, new birth in Christ, is a gift of God. Peter says, “In his great mercy,” God “has given us new birth into a living hope.” As Paul says, we were dead in our “transgressions and sin” and “by nature deserving of wrath. But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy,  made us alive with Christ” (Eph.2:1-5). Once, we were “without hope and without God in the world” (Eph.2:12).  BUT NOW, we have a living hope in Christ Jesus.

 Our faith in Jesus Christ is the foundation for our hope. As a hymn goes, we stand on Christ, the solid rock, “all other ground is sinking sand.” Jesus Christ’s resurrection is the foundation for our Christian faith. Our living hope and Christian faith are inter-connected and inseparable. Worldly inheritance is not permanent; it can be destroyed by moths and vermin and stolen by others (Mt.6:19). But our new birth or born again experience leads us to receive “an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade.” Our inheritance in Christ is eternal, and God preserves it for us. When we are born again, we become the children of God and heirs of God (Rom.8:14-17). When we know that we are children of God, praising God will be our natural response, for it is God’s unmerited favor, grace Peter does the same when he says, “Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ!”Jesus is our hope (1 Tim.1:1); we have a living hope through him; Jesus’ second coming is the blessed hope for all believers (Tit.2:13). Bill Bright, the founder of Campus Crusade for Christ, says, “With God, life is an endless hope. Without God, life is a hopeless end.” Do we have this blessed living hope in our lives? It is God’s wonderful gift for humanity. The living hope helps us to live victorious Christian living. 

APPLICATION: I have a new life in Christ. My faith in God enables me to hope against all hopes. The living hope that God has given me helps me to live for his glory. I am called to receive the eternal reward that God has kept safe for me in heaven. My hope is in Christ; Christ in me is “the hope of glory” (Col.1:27).

PRAYER: Gracious and compassionate God, thank you for the great mercy you have shown me. I praise you for your gift of a new life, living hope, eternal inheritance. Lord, help me to hold my faith and living hope firmly and stand firm in it till the end. Amen.

எல்லா காலத்திற்கும் ஏற்ற ஒரு வார்த்தை

வாசிக்க: எசேக்கியேல் 43,44; சங்கீதம் 144; யாக்கோபு 5

வேத வசனம்: யாக்கோபு 5: 13. உங்களில் ஒருவன் துன்பப்பட்டால் ஜெபம்பண்ணக்கடவன்; ஒருவன் மகிழ்ச்சியாயிருந்தால் சங்கீதம் பாடக்கடவன்.

கவனித்தல்:   ”நான் இதைச் செய்திருந்தால், நான் அதைத் தவிர்த்திருக்கலாம் அல்லது அதைப் பெற்றுக் கொண்டிருப்பேன்” என்று நடக்காத விஷயத்தைப் பற்றி சிலர் பேசுவதுண்டு. சிலர் தங்கள் கடந்த காலத்தில் வாழ்ந்து கொண்டிருக்கின்றனர்; தங்களுடைய கடந்த கால சிறப்பான வாழ்க்கையை நினைத்து அல்லது கடந்த கால தோல்விகளை நினைத்து வருந்தி வாழ்ந்து கொண்டிருக்கின்றனர். கடந்த காலத்தில்  முடிந்து போனவைகள் முடிந்து போனவைதான்; அவைகளை நாம் மாற்ற முடியாது என்பதை நாம் நினைவில் கொள்ள வேண்டும். நாம் நிகழ் காலத்தில் வாழ்கிறவர்களாக இருந்து, எதிர்காலத்திற்காக நம்மை ஆயத்தம் செய்கிறவர்களாக வாழ வேண்டும். யாக்கோபு 5ஆம் அதிகாரத்தில், நிகழ்காலத்தில் வாழ்வதற்கான சில நடைமுறை ஆலோசனைகளை நாம் காண்கிறோம்.  யாக்கோபு சில எளிய கேள்விகளைக் கேட்டு, அப்படிப்பட்ட சமயங்களில் நாம் என்ன செய்ய வேண்டும் எனச் சொல்கிறார். ஒருவர் துன்ப்பபட்டால், அவர் உடனடியாக செய்ய வேண்டியது ஜெபம் ஆகும்.  யாக்கோபு 5:13இல், அது என்ன வகையான துன்பம் என யாக்கோபு குறிப்பிடவில்லை. அவருடைய காலத்தில், யூதக் கிறிஸ்தவர்கள் தங்கள் கிறிஸ்தவ விசுவாசத்தினிமித்தம் அனேக உபத்திரவங்களையும், பாகுபாடுகளையும், மற்றும் அவமானங்களையும் எதிர் கொண்டனர்.  நாமும் நம் வாழ்வில் பலவிதமான துன்பங்களை எதிர்கொள்ள நேரிடலாம்.  அப்படிப்பட்ட சமயங்களில், நாம் ஜெபிக்கும்போது, நாம் தேவனைச் சார்ந்து இருக்கிறோம் என்பதையும், நம் துன்பத்தை ஜெயிக்க அவருடைய உதவியையும் வல்லமையையும் நாடுகிறோம் என்பதை வெளிப்படுத்துகிறோம்.

நாம் ஜெபிக்கும்போது, ”ஜெபத்தினால் சந்திக்கப்பட முடியாத தேவை மற்றும் ஜெபத்தினால் தீர்க்கப்பட முடியாத பிரச்சனை என்று எதுவும் இல்லை” என்று நாம் தேவன் மீது நம்பிக்கையாக இருக்க முடியும். யாக்கோபு 5:13 எழுதப்பட்ட சூழலைப் பார்க்கும்போது, யாக்கோபு 5:13-18 வரையிலான வசனங்களில் ஜெபமானது முக்கியமான கருப்பொருளாக இருப்பதை நாம் காண்கிறோம்.  இந்த வேதப் பகுதியின் ஒவ்வொரு வசனமும் ஜெபத்துடன் தொடர்புடையதாக இருக்கிறது. யூசிபியஸ் என்ற மூன்றாவது நூற்றாண்டைச் சேர்ந்த கிறிஸ்தவ தலைவர் யாக்கோபு எப்பொழுதும் ஜெபிக்கும் மனிதராக, ஜெபத்தின் வல்லமையை விசுவாசித்த ஒருவராக வாழ்ந்தார் என எழுதுகிறார். முழங்காலில் நீண்ட நேரன் நின்று மக்களுக்காக அவர் ஜெபித்ததை  அனைவரும் அறிந்திருந்தனர். அவருடைய முழங்கால்களில் ஒட்டகத்திற்கு இருப்பது போல காய்ப்பு இருந்தது. ஆகவே மக்கள் அவரை ”ஒட்டகத்தின் முழங்கால்களை உடைய மனிதர்” என அழைத்தனர்.  யாக்கோபு தன் வாழ்வில் கைக்கொண்டு வந்தவைகளில் இருந்து ஜெபம் செய்ய உற்சாகப்படுத்தி எழுதுகிறார்.

ஒருவர் மகிழ்ச்சியாக இருக்கும்போது, சங்கீதம் பாட யாக்கோபு அழைக்கிறார். நாம் துன்பப்பட்டாலும், ஆசீர்வாதமாக இருந்தாலும், நாம் ஜெபம் மற்றும் துதிப் பாடல் மூலமாக தேவனிடம் செல்ல முடியும். நம்மை ஆசீர்வதிக்கிற தேவனை நாம் மறந்துவிடக் கூடாது.  ஸ்டீவன் ஜே. கோல் என்பவர் சொல்வது போல, “நம் வாழ்வில் பாடுகள் அல்லது நிறைவான ஆசீர்வாதங்கள் என எவை இருந்தாலும், அது தேவனை நோக்கியதாக, தேவனைச் சார்ந்ததாக இருக்க வேண்டும்.” யாக்கோபு 1:2,3இல், ”என் சகோதரரே, நீங்கள் பலவிதமான சோதனைகளில் அகப்படும்போது… அதை மிகுந்த சந்தோஷமாக எண்ணுங்கள்” என்று யாக்கோபு எழுதுகிறார். “பாடுபடுகிறவருக்கும் உற்சாகமாக இருக்கிறவருக்கும் யாக்கோபு கூறும் ஒரே அறிவுரை ”அதைக் கர்த்தரித்தில் எடுத்துச் செல் என்பதே. உண்மையைச் சொல்வதானால், இந்த இரண்டு கட்டளைகளையும் மாற்றிச் சொல்ல முடியும்: பாடுபடுகிறவர்கள் ஜெபிக்கவும், மகிழ்ச்சியாக இருக்கிறவர்கள் பாடவும் வேண்டும்” என பாஸ்டர் டேவிட் கூஜிக் எழுதுகிறார். நம் வாழ்வின் நிகழ்கால சூழ்நிலைகள் என்னவாக இருந்தாலும், நாம் எல்லாவற்றிற்காகவும் தேவனிடம் ஜெபித்து  அவரைத் துதிக்க முடியும்

பயன்பாடு:  நான் என் வாழ்வில் பிரச்சனைகளைச் சந்திக்கும்போதெல்லாம், மற்றவர்களின் உதவியைத் தேடுவதற்கு முன்பு, ஜெபத்தில் தேவனுடைய உதவியை நான் தேட வேண்டும்.   நான் ஜெபிக்கும்போது, நான் எதிர்கொள்கிற பிரச்சனையை கடந்து செல்கிறதற்கான வலிமையை கண்டு கொள்கிறேன். நான் தேவனுக்குக் கீழ்ப்படிந்து அவருடைய சித்தத்தைச் செய்ய என்னை ஒப்புக் கொடுக்கிறேன்.  நான் ஜெபித்து, தேவனைத் துதிக்கும்போது, என் கவனத்தை தேவனிடம் திருப்புகிறேன்; என் சூழ்நிலைகள் அல்ல, அவர் என் மகிழ்ச்சியின் ஆதாரமாக மாறுகிறார்.

Day – 327

A word for all seasons

READ: Ezekiel 43,44; Psalms 144; James 5

SCRIPTURE: James 5: 13 Is anyone among you in trouble? Let them pray. Is anyone happy? Let them sing songs of praise.

OBSERVATION: Some people say about something that did not happen by saying, “If I had done this, I would have avoided or received this.” Some people live in their past; they either live in their past glory or regret their past failures. We must remember that what is past is past; we cannot change it. We must live in the present and prepare ourselves for the future. In James 5, we see some practical suggestions to live in our present. James asks some simple questions and tells us what should be done in such situations. When a person is in trouble, his immediate response should be prayer. In Jam.5:13, James does not mention what kind of trouble it is. The Jewish Christians of that time were facing persecution, discrimination, and humiliation for their Christian faith. We may face various troubles in our lives. At such times, when we pray, we express our reliance on God and seek his help and power to overcome our trouble.

As we pray, we can be confident in God that “there is no need that prayer cannot meet and no problem that prayer cannot solve.” When we read the context of James 5:13, we see that prayer is the key theme in James 5:13-18. Every verse of this passage says something about prayer. Eusebius, a third-century Christian leader, writes that James was a man of prayer who believed in the power of prayer. He was known for spending more time on his knees and praying for the people. His knees became calloused like a camel’s, so people called him “The man with Camel’s Knees.” James writes from what he practiced in his life.

 When a person is happy, James calls to “sing songs of praise.” Whether we suffer or prosper, we can go to God in prayer and praise. We should not forget our God who blesses us. As Steven J. Cole says, “all of life, whether suffering or sufficiency, should be lived with a God-ward, God-dependent focus.” In chapter 1, James writes, “Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds” (Jam.1:2). Pastor David Guzik says, “James has the same advice for both the suffering one and the cheerful one: take it all to the Lord. In fact, the two commands could be reversed: sufferers should sing also, and the cheerful should also pray.” Regardless of our present situation, we can pray and praise God for everything.

APPLICATION: Whenever I face troubles in my life before looking for help from others, I must remember to seek God in prayer. When I pray, I find the strength to go through the trouble I face; I submit myself to obey God and his will. When I pray and praise God, it turns my attention to God; he becomes the source of my strength and joy, not my present situation.

PRAYER: Father God, you are my “refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble” (Ps.46:1). Lord, help me to seek you always and live under your care and power. Amen.

உமக்குப் பிரியமானதைச் செய்ய எனக்குப் போதித்தருளும்

வாசிக்க: எசேக்கியேல் 41,42; சங்கீதம் 143; யாக்கோபு 4

வேத வசனம்: சங்கீதம் 143: 10. உமக்குப் பிரியமானதைச் செய்ய எனக்குப் போதித்தருளும், நீரே என் தேவன்; உம்முடைய நல்ல ஆவி என்னைச் செம்மையான வழியிலே நடத்துவாராக.

கவனித்தல்:  மனம் திரும்புதலின் சங்கீதங்கள் (Penitential Psalms) அல்லது பாவ அறிக்கையின் சங்கீதங்களில் சங்கீதம் 143 ஏழாவதும் கடைசியுமானது ஆகும் (மற்றவை, சங்கீதம் 6;32;38;51;102;130). தாவீது தன் மகனாகிய அப்சலோம் தனக்கு விரோதமாகச் சதி செய்த போது அவனுக்குத் தப்பியோடிய போது இந்த சங்கீதத்தை எழுதினார் என சொல்லப்படுகிறது. இந்த ஜெப சங்கீதத்தில், தேவனுடைய சித்தத்தை அறிந்து கொள்வதற்காக தாவீது ஜெபிக்காமல், தேவனுக்குப் பிரியமானதைச் செய்ய போதித்தருளும்படி கர்த்தரிடம் அவர் கேட்கிறார். சங்கீதத்தில் குறிப்பிட்டிருக்கிறபடி, சங்கீதக்காரன் துயரத்திலும், தான் சந்தித்த பிரச்சனைகளில் இருந்து வெளிவர மிகவும் தீவிரமாக இருந்திருக்க வேண்டும்.  தாவீது மிகவும் சோர்ந்து போய், தான் முன்பு நன்றாக இருந்த நாட்கள் மறுபடியும் திரும்ப வரவேண்டும் என ஏங்குகிறார். அப்படிப்பட்ட ஒரு நிலையிலும், தன் வாழ்வில் தேவனுடைய சித்தத்தைச் செய்வதின் முக்கியத்துவத்தை அவர் உணர்ந்திருந்தார். நாம் மரண இருளின் பள்ளத்தாக்கினூடாக நடந்து செல்லும் போதும் கூட, தேவனுடைய சித்தத்தைச் செய்வதே நாம் செய்யக் கூடிய சிறந்த காரியமாக இருக்கிறது. நாம் தேவனுடைய சித்தத்தைச் செய்யும்போது, அவருடைய பலத்தையும் ஆறுதலையும் பெறுகிறோம். தாவீது இந்த உண்மையை நன்கறிந்திருந்தார். தாவீது தேவனுடனான தன் உறவைக் குறித்த நிச்சயமுள்ளவராகவும், தேவ சித்தத்தைச் செய்ய அவருக்கிருந்த இயலாமைகளையும் அறிந்திருந்தார். ஆகவே, “உமக்குப் பிரியமானதைச் செய்ய எனக்குப் போதித்தருளும்” என்று அவர் ஜெபித்தார்.

தேவனுடைய சித்தத்தைச்  செய்கிறதற்கு தாவீது தேவனை முற்றிலும் சார்ந்திருந்ததை அவர் ஜெபம் காண்பிக்கிறது. நாம் ஒரு குறைவுமின்றி தேவனுக்குப் பிரியமானவைகளைச் செய்ய தேவன் மட்டுமே நமக்கு உதவ முடியும். எனவே, தாவீது தேவ ஆவியின் வழிநடத்துலை நாடி ஜெபிக்கிறார். தேவன் அவரைச் செம்மையான வழிகளில் நடத்துவார் என அவர் நம்பினார். பரிசுத்த ஆவியானவர் நடத்திச் செல்கிற பாதையானது ஆபத்துகள் இல்லாத பாதுகாப்பானதாக இருக்கும். தேவனுடைய சித்தம் இன்னதென்றும், எது சரி அல்லது தவறு என்றும் நம்மில் பலர் அறிந்திருக்கிறோம். ஆயினும், அவைகளை நம் வாழ்க்கையில் கைக்கொள்ளாமல் சாக்குப்போக்குகளையும்,  நம் பலவீனங்களைச் சொல்லி கொண்டு இருக்கிறோம். தாவீதைப் போல, நாமும் தேவன் தமக்குப் பிரியமானதை நமக்கு போதித்து, அதைச் செய்ய பலப்படுத்தியருளும்படி நாம் ஜெபிக்கலாம். ”சத்திய ஆவியானவர் வரும்போது” அவர் நம்மை சகல சத்தியத்திற்குள்ளும் வழிநடத்துகிறார் (யோவான் 16:13). பரிசுத்த ஆவியானவர் ஒருபோதும் நம்மைத் தவறாக வழிநடத்துவதில்லை, ஏனெனில் அவர் தேவனுக்குரியவைகளை நன்கறிந்திருக்கிறார். நாம் எல்லாவற்றிலும் தேவனை நம்ப முடியும். நாம் நம் வாழ்க்கைப் பிரச்சனைகளால் சூழப்பட்டிருக்கும்போது, நம் யோசனைகளை பயன்படுத்தி அவைகளைச் சரி செய்வதற்குப் பதிலாக, நாம் தேவனுக்குப் பிரியமான சித்தம் இன்னதென்று உணர்ந்து, அதைச் செய்ய தேவன் நம்மை போதித்து வழிநடத்த நாம் அவரிடம் கேட்டு ஜெபிக்கலாம்.

பயன்பாடு: தேவன் என்னை எவ்விதமான ஆபத்துகளிலும் இருந்து காப்பாற்ற முடியும். தேவனைத் தேடி நாடுகிறவர்களுக்கு அவர் நல்லவராகவே இருக்கிறார். தேவன் அவருடைய சித்தத்தை எனக்குப் போதித்து, அதைச் செய்வதற்கு என்னைப் பலப்படுத்துகிறார். மனிதருக்குச் செவ்வையாக தோன்றுகிற வழிகள் மரணத்திற்கு வழிநடத்துகின்றன (நீதி.14:12). ஆனால் தேவன் ஜீவனுக்குள் என்னை வழிநடத்துகிறார். நான் தேவனுடைய போதனைக்குக் கீழ்ப்படிந்து, தேவ ஆவியானவரின் வழிநடத்துதலைப் பின்பற்றித் தொடரும்போது நான் தேவனுக்குப் பிரியமானதைச் செய்ய முடியும்.

ஜெபம்: தந்தையாகிய தெய்வமே, உம் கிருபைக்காகவும், மாறாத உம் வார்த்தைக்காகவும் நன்றி. கர்த்தாவே, உம் வழிகளை எனக்குப் போதித்து, உம் சித்தம் செய்ய என்னைப் பலப்படுத்தியருளும். பரிசுத்த ஆவியானவரே, தேவ சித்தம் செய்ய நான் உம்மைச் சார்ந்து இருக்கிறேன்; நான் அனுதினமும் தேவனுக்குப் பிரியமானவைகளைச் செய்யவும் தேவ வார்த்தையின்படி வாழவும் என்னை வழிநடத்தியருளும். ஆமென்.

Day – 326

Teach me to do your will

READ: Ezekiel 41,42; Psalms 143; James 4

SCRIPTURE: Psalms 143: 10 Teach me to do your will, for you are my God; may your good Spirit lead me on level ground.

OBSERVATION: Psalm 143 is the last of seven Penitential Psalms or Psalms of Confession (the others being Ps.6;32;38;51;102;130). It is said that David wrote this psalm when he fled from his son Absalom who conspired against him. In this prayer psalm, David was not praying to know God’s will but asked the Lord to teach him to do God’s will. As indicated in the psalm, the psalmist must have been in distress and was desperate to come out of the problems he faced. David was dismayed and longing for the return of good old days and deliverance from the Lord. Even in such a situation, he understood the importance of doing God’s will in his life. Though we walk through “the valley of the shadow of death,” submitting ourselves to do God’s will is the best thing we can do. We can find God’s comfort and strength in doing his will. David knew this truth well. David was confident about his relationship with God and knew his inabilities to do God’s will. So he prayed, “Teach me to do your will.”

David’s prayer shows his dependence on God in doing God’s will. God alone can help us to do his will without any lapse. Then David asked for the guidance of the Spirit of God. He trusted God would lead him on “level ground.” The place where the Holy Spirit guides will be free from any dangers. Many of us already know God’s will and what is right or wrong. However, we fail to practice it in our lives by saying excuses and citing our weaknesses. Like David, we too can ask the Lord to teach and enable us to do his will. When “the Spirit of truth comes,” he guides us into all the truth (Jn.16:13). The Holy Spirit never misleads us, for he knows the thoughts of God. We can trust God in everything. When we are surrounded by many issues of our lives, instead of trying our ideas to solve them, we can seek God’s will and ask God to give us his instruction and guidance to fulfill it.

APPLICATION: God can rescue me from any dangers. The Lord is good to those who seek and trust him. God teaches and trains me to do his will. Human ways that “appear to be right” lead to death (Pro.14;12), but God guides me to life. I can do God’s will by obeying his instruction and following the guidance of the Spirit of God.

PRAYER: Father God, thank you for your unfailing love and unchanging word. Lord, teach me your ways and strengthen me to do your will. Holy Spirit, I depend on you to do God’s will; lead me every day to do God’s will and live according to his word. Amen.
