The fate of a fruitless tree

READ: Deuteronomy 1, 2; Psalm 77; Mark 11:1-19

SCRIPTURE: Mark 11: 13 Seeing in the distance a fig tree in leaf, he (Jesus) went to find out if it had any fruit. When he reached it, he found nothing but leaves, because it was not the season for figs.
14 Then he said to the tree, “May no one ever eat fruit from you again.” And his disciples heard him say it.

OBSERVATION: Jesus' searching for fruits in a fig tree was a prelude to his temple visit  at Jerusalem. Usually, a fig tree with full of leaves would have many ripened fruits. Here, this tree is an an exception. In distance it appeared as a tree with full of fruits. However, when Jesus came near to the tree, he saw "nothing but leaves." He must had been disappointed at the fruitlessness of the tree with full of leaves. His disciples heard Jesus' words about the tree. In the Old Testament, prophets compared Israelites to fig tree, when they prophesized about God's judgement and punishment (for example: Jer.8:13, Hos.9:10). When Jesus entered the Jerusalem temple, he saw the lack of sanctity of the place. Instead of allowing the gentiles to worship the God almighty, Jews  had  turned a place of worship and prayer  into a business center. History tells us how Jesus' prophecy about Jerusalem fulfilled in later years.

APPLICATION:  I may be concerned about how I show myself to others in outward appearance.  But, Jesus wants to see me as a fruit-bearing person. When Jesus finds nothing but leaves i.e. no fruit in me, I give disappointment to him. To be a fruitful person, I need to meditate the word of God and to live accordingly (Ps.1). As a disciple of Jesus, I listen to what Jesus told about the fig tree.  And I will be careful about not about the leaves, but fruits.

PRAYER: Jesus, thank you for the reminder that I must be fruitful to you. Help me to live as your faithful follower to show your love and share a fruitful life with others. Help me to abide in you to yield more fruits for you. Amen.

What do you want?

READ: Numbers 35, 36; Psalm 76; Mark 10:32-52

SCRIPTURE: Mark 10:51 “What do you want me to do for you?” Jesus asked (Bartimaeus) him. The blind man said, “Rabbi, I want to see.”
52 “Go,” said Jesus, “your faith has healed you.” Immediately he received his sight and followed Jesus along the road.

OBSERVATION: The healing of the blind Bartimaeus is an interesting miracle that teaches us a lot. It is notable to see the name of the person who was healed, for the Gospel does not mention such names, generally.  Here, Jesus asks the same question he previously asked his disciples James and John, "What do you want me to do for you?”  Before Jesus asked his disciples, they came to him with a demand of "whatever we ask” (v.35). The blind Bartimaeus cannot come to Jesus without others' help. However, when he came to know that Jesus was passing on the road where he sat for begging, he cried out “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!” It is surprising that in the Gospel of Mark, Bartimaeus was the only person who used the phrase "Son of David" for Jesus. His blindness was not a hindrance to recognize who the Messiah was! Notice the difference between the expectation of Jesus' disciples and Bartimaeus. Also look at the different answers to this question (see v.37, 51). When James and John were seeking for a high position, Bartimaeus replied, "Rabbi, I want to see." Here Jesus just asked to "GO" with an acknowledgement of Bartimaeus's faith. Jesus did not ask questions, like he did with his disciples. Interestingly, right after he received his sight, Bartimaeus followed Jesus. He must had received a vision to see Jesus clearly, a spiritual sight.

APPLICATION: We can ask Jesus, anything we want. However, not everything will be appropriate. Sometimes, we may ask the right things in the wrong times. Jesus told that our heavenly father knows our every need, even before we ask him (Mt.6:8). When I  pray and seek God, I need  the sight to see what God has already prepared for us. When I ask humbly with love and accepting him as my lord and savior, he honors my faith in him. When I receive the required sight for me, I follow Jesus even more clearly and closely.

PRAYER: Jesus, thank you for answering our earnest prayers. However, help me to ask/pray according to your will, not on my desires. Rabbi, open my eyes  to see you clearly, and help me to follow you in my life.  Amen.

Do not allow the old to remain

READ: Numbers 33, 34; Psalm 75; Mark 10:1-31

SCRIPTURE: Numbers 33: 55 “‘But if you do not drive out the inhabitants of the land, those you allow to remain will become barbs in your eyes and thorns in your sides. They will give you trouble in the land where you will live. 56 And then I will do to you what I plan to do to them.’”

OBSERVATION: Here in Numbers 33:50-56, we see how God prepares all the Israelites to take possession of the promised land Canaan. While God instructed them regarding the settlement areas of each tribe and their boundaries, he warned them about to be cautious about the inhabitants of the land. God forewarned them that their idol worship and practices could become a trap against the Israelites' peaceful living in the promised land under God's rule. In the Exodus journey, we already saw that the non-Israelites' craving for other food (other than Manna)  resulted in a plague that killed many Israelites (Num.11:4, 33). God commanded Israelites to destroy anything related to the Canaanite idol worship and to drive away the Canaanites, as soon as the Israelites entered the promised land. If they were not removed, they would cause the Israelites to go away from the Lord.

APPLICATION: Even in our spiritual life, how true it is! If I allow my old sinful nature, thoughts, habits, practices to reside in me, it would easily lead myself away from the Lord. They would wait for an opportunity to make me fall. In order to live a free life in Christ, I should not allow them to live in me. Rather, I should commit myself to God, and to offer every part of me to him as an instrument of righteousness. I know my old-self is crucified with Jesus (Rom.6). As I  live for Christ, I have no place for my old self.

PRAYER: Father God, thank you for your instruction for a peaceful and blessed life where you have placed me. Loving Lord, cover me with your grace so that nothing can separate me from you. Amen.
