Before Christ and After Christ

 READ: Isaiah 61,62; Psalms 93; Ephesians 2

SCRIPTURE: Ephesians 2: 1 As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins,
2 in which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient.

OBSERVATION: Until recently, people predominantly used the BC (means before Christ and AD (in Latin, it means “in the year of the Lord.”) when they mentioned any date or year. For religious neutrality in saying the years, people now started to use BCE and CE (CE stands for Common Era). Change in the name or abbreviations will not change any truths of the history of the world or Jesus. In his epistles to the Ephesians, Paul presents a picture of the new man who lives in Christ and says the difference between the old sinful life and new life in Christ.

Before we came to Jesus, we were slaves to sin. We were dead in our transgressions and sins (Rom.6:20). Formerly, we did not know God (Gal.4:8) and were in darkness (Eph.5:8). Once, we were not people of God (1 Pet. 2:10). We were under the dominion of darkness (Col.1:13).  Essentially, we were spiritually dead and were deserved to receive God’s wrath. We were away from God as foreigners and aliens to him. Next to God, we know what our past life is. But God who loves us, chosen us to be his children, gave us a new life in Christ. We who were spiritually dead are now alive in Christ.  In Christ, we become a new creation; “The old has gone, the new is here!” (2 Cor.5:17). Our new life in Christ is the gift of God (Eph.2:8). We should not continue to live our former Christless life. Instead, we should have a clear picture of who we are in Christ and live accordingly. As a spiritual exercise, as we read and meditate on the Ephesians, let us write down what we find about ourselves in the epistle.

APPLICATION: I have a new identity and life in Christ. Christ lives in me and enables me to fight against sins and carnal desires. I should not live in my past. I should experience and enjoy Jesus every day. I will/should allow Christ to reign my life, not sins. When Satan reminds me of my past, I need to remember who I am in Christ.

PRAYER: Father God, thank you for the new life you have given us. Help me to live as your child who fears nothing but God. Holy Spirit, help me to obey God’s commandments. Lord, help me to remember who I am in Christ and apply it in my life to sit and reign with Christ.

வேத வசனம்:  எபேசியர் 1: 18. தாம் நம்மை அழைத்ததினாலே நமக்கு உண்டாயிருக்கிற நம்பிக்கை இன்னதென்றும், பரிசுத்தவான்களிடத்தில் தமக்கு உண்டாயிருக்கிற சுதந்தரத்தினுடைய மகிமையின் ஐசுவரியம் இன்னதென்றும்;
19.

A Prayer for your spiritual blessing

 READ: Isaiah 59,60; Psalms 92; Ephesians 1

SCRIPTURE: Ephesians 1: 18 I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in his holy people,
19 and his incomparably great power for us who believe.

OBSERVATION: When we are in the midst of a problem, we earnestly pray for a solution that solves it. Most of the time, our prayers come from our life situations. Paul’s epistle to Ephesians is one of the prison epistles he wrote when he was under house arrest in Rome. However, Paul never prayed for his deliverance during his imprisonment. Instead, he prays a profound prayer for the believers that the eyes of their hearts may be enlightened. In other words, Paul prays that they might have spiritual eyes to see their spiritual blessings in the Lord. Here, the eyes of one’s heart do not refer to a literal organ of our human body. A pastor friend says, “The eyes of our heart refers to a deep-seated understanding.” Holy Spirit illuminates and enlightens our hearts to see the spiritual blessings we have in Christ. The Bible says Holy Spirit is the spirit of wisdom and revelation who teaches us everything and guides us into all the truth (Isa. 11:2; John 14:25–26; 16:12–14). We all need the “Spirit of wisdom and revelation” to know God and his plans for us.

Here, Paul wants the believers to know of three things:  the hope of God’s calling, the riches of his glorious inheritance, and his great power for us. We have hope in Christ; Christ is our hope. In him, we have hope for our eternal life. In verse 14, Paul says, Holy Spirit “is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance.” In Christ, we receive God’s glorious inheritance. When we believe God, God gives us his great power, the same power that raised Jesus from the dead and seated him at the right hand of God. We cannot fully explain and understand these three things from our human wisdom. When God enlightens the eyes of our hearts, Holy Spirit helps us to understand the heavenly secrets. It is an amazing truth that God wants everyone who believes in him to know him.

APPLICATION: Before coming to Christ, spiritually, I was in darkness. But now, I am one among the children of light. The world does not offer any hope for my life and future. But Christ gives me hope of eternity, and he is my hope. Christ in me is the hope of glory. I am an heir of God and co-heir with Christ. I have an eternal inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God.

PRAYER: Father God, thank you for your call to be your child and to live a holy life that praises your name. Lord, help me to experience the power of Jesus’ resurrection in my life today. Holy Spirit, open the eyes of my heart to know God better every day. Amen.

Law of Christ that compels us to love

 READ: Isaiah 57,58; Psalms 91; Galatians 6

SCRIPTURE: Galatians 6: 1 Brothers and sisters, if someone is caught in a sin, you who live by the Spirit should restore that person gently. But watch yourselves, or you also may be tempted.
2 Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.

OBSERVATION: “Would a Christian sin?” is one of the frequently asked questions among Christians. Sometimes, we hear and see the fall of Christians who were once very passionate about serving the Lord. Even in our local churches, we may see such Christians who failed to safeguard themselves against sins. How do we handle such Christians? In general, when a person is caught in a sin, people will be ready to destroy his/her life, as the Pharisees did in Jesus’ time (John 8:4-5). That is what legalism tells people. In Gal.6:1, Apostle Paul does not say about a habitual sinner who deliberately/willingly sins against the Lord. Here, he gives some practical suggestions to the Galatians who were misguided by the Judaizers or legalists who emphasized following the law of Moses. It is an important area that every Christian and church should be aware of to help Christians who struggle with sinful thoughts and traps.

People may say how shall we tolerate such a person who is caught in sin or some will try to save the person from any severe punishment. Instead of taking any biased decisions, it is our responsibility to restore such sinner(s) and help them to come back to Christ. In Gal.5, Paul tells Galatians to  “walk by the Spirit”; He contrasts the acts of the flesh and the fruit of the Spirit. In Gal.6, he calls those who “live by the spirit” to show the fruit of the Spirit to restore the person who is caught in a sin. Some may think, it is the responsibility of church leaders or powerful persons in the church to handle that person. As Christians, we are all members of one body in Christ. The Christian life is against selfish life; it is a self-denying life. We are called to serve one another (Gal.5:13). We are to “carry each other’s burdens.” At the same time, we need to be watchful in our walk with the Lord to protect us from any sinful temptations. Those who are standing firm should be careful not to fall (1 Cor.10:12).

By helping a fellow Christian, caring for each others’ burdens, Paul says we fulfill the law of Christ. Old Testament Law prescribes punishment to those who violate it. The law of Christ commands us to show love to rebuild and restore a person. It is easy to blame a person for his/her sin and punish them. Let us consider: If Jesus asks us the same thing that he told the teachers of the law and the Pharisees, what would be our response? (Jn.8:4). Let us remember what Jesus did and told to Peter when he predicted his denial: Jesus prayed for Peter that his “faith may not fail” and told him, “when you have turned back, strengthen your brothers” (Luke.22:31, 32). It is interesting to read that in the preceding verses of Jesus’ prediction, Jesus says about his new command of loving one another (Jn.13:34-35). As Jesus’ disciples, let us love one another and build a community of love.

APPLICATION: When I come to know about a Christian friend’s or believer’s sin, I should not put up with it but should show him/her Christ’s love that would help to come back to the Lord. My priority should be fulfilling the law of Christ than condemning or punishing them. As a Christian, I should not gratify the desires of the flesh.  I should live by the Spirit.

PRAYER: Father God, thank you for your word that leads me to your love and light. Jesus, help me to love one another just as you love me. Lord, help me to keep in step with the Spirit and to live by the Spirit. Amen.
