READ: Isaiah 59,60; Psalms 92; Ephesians 1
SCRIPTURE: Ephesians 1: 18 I
pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know
the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in
his holy people,
19 and his incomparably great power for us who believe.
OBSERVATION: When we are
in the midst of a problem, we earnestly pray for a solution that solves it.
Most of the time, our prayers come from our life situations. Paul’s epistle to
Ephesians is one of the prison epistles he wrote when he was under house arrest
in Rome. However, Paul never prayed for his deliverance during his imprisonment.
Instead, he prays a profound prayer for the believers that the eyes of their
hearts may be enlightened. In other words, Paul prays that they might have
spiritual eyes to see their spiritual blessings in the Lord. Here, the eyes of
one’s heart do not refer to a literal organ of our human body. A pastor friend
says, “The eyes of our heart refers to a deep-seated understanding.” Holy
Spirit illuminates and enlightens our hearts to see the spiritual blessings we
have in Christ. The Bible says Holy Spirit is the spirit of wisdom and
revelation who teaches us everything and guides us into all the truth (Isa.
11:2; John 14:25–26; 16:12–14). We all need the “Spirit of wisdom and revelation”
to know God and his plans for us.
Here, Paul wants the believers to
know of three things: the hope of God’s
calling, the riches of his glorious inheritance, and his great power for us. We
have hope in Christ; Christ is our hope. In him, we have hope for our eternal life.
In verse 14, Paul says, Holy Spirit “is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance.”
In Christ, we receive God’s glorious inheritance. When we believe God, God
gives us his great power, the same power that raised Jesus from the dead and
seated him at the right hand of God. We cannot fully explain and understand
these three things from our human wisdom. When God enlightens the eyes of our hearts,
Holy Spirit helps us to understand the heavenly secrets. It is an amazing truth
that God wants everyone who believes in him to know him.
APPLICATION: Before coming to
Christ, spiritually, I was in darkness. But now, I am one among the children of
light. The world does not offer any hope for my life and future. But Christ
gives me hope of eternity, and he is my hope. Christ in me is the hope of
glory. I am an heir of God and co-heir with Christ. I have an eternal inheritance
in the kingdom of Christ and of God.
PRAYER: Father God,
thank you for your call to be your child and to live a holy life that praises
your name. Lord, help me to experience the power of Jesus’ resurrection in my
life today. Holy Spirit, open the eyes of my heart to know God better every day.
Amen.
