You are not forgotten

 READ: Isaiah 43,44; Psalms 84; 2 Corinthians 12

SCRIPTURE: Isaiah 44: 21 “Remember these things, Jacob, for you, Israel, are my servant. I have made you, you are my servant; Israel, I will not forget you.
22 I have swept away your offenses like a cloud, your sins like the morning mist. Return to me, for I have redeemed you.”

OBSERVATION: During difficult times, one may think that all have forgotten and forsaken him/her. Here, prophet Isaiah tells a prophecy concerning the redemption of Israelites who would be exiled from the promised land. After warning against idol worship and exposing the stupidity of worshipping human-made idols, God calls his people to remember his words and reminds them about who he is to Israel and who they are to God. Unlike the idols, God is our Creator. We are his servants. God promises that he will not forget his people. In Isaiah 43:22-24, God says that the Israelites did not seek him with all of their hearts. However, it does not stop God from loving them. We are God’s chosen ones; he will never reject us. Instead, God is always with us  (Is.41:8-10). He encourages us to fear for nothing. God says, “I have summoned you by name; you are mine” (Is.43:1). In Is.44:21, God reminds us that he is our maker and will not forget us.

God calls his people to return to him. When we go to God, he offers forgiveness to remove our transgressions and cleanse us from sins. Through prophet Jeremiah, God invites, “If you, Israel, will return, then return to me (Jer.4:1). It is easy for God to help us and make us clean to stand before him. When we return to God with repentance, he is able to blot out all our offenses and sins (Is.44:22; 1:18). The reason God calls us to return to him is, for he has redeemed us (Is. 43:1, 44: 22,23). God is our “Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel” (Is.41:14). When we read these promises that God gave through his prophet Isaiah, we should remember that they were foretold many years before the actual events. This all-knowing God has called us by name.  Our Creator God will never forget us. Do we always remember him? God can use /change anyone and anything to fulfill his promises. As God’s servants, we must serve him faithfully. Jesus redeemed us with his blood (1 Pet.1:18-19). “Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need” (Heb.4:16; 10:19-24).

APPLICATION: God is my Creator. I will not give the space due to God to anyone or any worldly things. If there is any offensive way in me, I will repent and return to God.  I will remember God’s words and carefully follow them. I will serve God faithfully with a wholehearted devotion to him.

PRAYER: Creator God, thank you for your love that redeemed me. Lord, help me be faithful to worship and serve you. Holy Spirit,  give me the strength to walk with God every day without any stumbling.

Day - 265

Another Jesus, Another Spirit, Another Gospel – Beware!

 READ: Isaiah 41,42; Psalms 83; 2 Corinthians 11

SCRIPTURE: 2 Corinthians 11: 3 But I am afraid that just as Eve was deceived by the serpent’s cunning, your minds may somehow be led astray from your sincere and pure devotion to Christ.
4 For if someone comes to you and preaches a Jesus other than the Jesus we preached, or if you receive a different spirit from the Spirit you received, or a different gospel from the one you accepted, you put up with it easily enough.

OBSERVATION: In the last 2000 years, hundreds of men claimed that they were (re)incarnation of Jesus or the Messiah. According to internet sources, presently, there are twelve such persons who claim to be Jesus living in different parts of the world. It is disturbing that people are ready to follow such pseudo-Jesuses by believing their deceptive and cunning teachings. In Corinth Church, false apostles not only attacked Paul’s authority and apostle ministry, but they also tried to deceive the Corinth believers who were tolerating them. Paul surprises at the tolerance of the believers to hear false teachings. So Paul expresses his fear that it may lead them to believe the lies of false teachings just as Satan deceived Eve. Satan successfully deceived Eve to believe his lies that made her doubt God’s word. He cunningly alienated humanity from God. People are attracted to the boldness and communication skills of the false teachers and deceived by their crafty words. We should not allow anything that disrupts our pure devotion to Christ.

Paul proclaimed the crucified Christ (1 Cor.2:2), the Spirit who gives freedom (2 Cor.3:17) and preached the Gospel of grace and reconciliation (2 Cor.5:19). But the false apostles’ teaching was contrary to what Paul preached—another Jesus, a different spirit, and a different gospel. False teachers boast that all they teach is a new revelation and reject anything other than what they preach. They try to prove their new interpretations by twisting the bible verses or choosing them at their convenience. If we are not watchful, we may fall into their traps. Paul says, “For such people are false apostles, deceitful workers, masquerading as apostles of Christ. And no wonder, for Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light” (2 Cor.11:13,14). Sometimes, false teachers would pretend to be zealous for the word of God. In the early Church, they were present in many places ( Gal.1:6-9; Col.2:20). In his farewell speech to Ephesians, Paul warned the Church elders concerning false teachers.(Acts 20:29-31). We should not allow or accept the false teachings infiltrate the Church in any form or through any man.

APPLICATION: I will not accept any teaching just because it is pleasant to my ears and attractive to believe it. I will test every teaching and preaching in the light of the Word of God. I will reject false teachings and warn others to be careful about false teachers and their words.

PRAYER: Father God, thank you for your word that helps us to understand the truth. Lord, help me to keep you the crucified savior before me always.  Holy Spirit, guide me into all the truth and protect me from believing false teachings and Satan’s lies. Amen.

A Spiritual Warfare

READ: Isaiah 39,40; Psalms 82; 2 Corinthians 10

SCRIPTURE: 2 Corinthians 10: 3 For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does.
4 The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds.
5 We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.

OBSERVATION: We often hear about world leaders’ call to fight against poverty, illiteracy, injustice, and oppression. However, within a few days or months, they forget about it or become busy with other activities. On the other hand, whether we want it or not, we Christians are always involved in a spiritual battle. The Bible says, “our struggle is not against flesh and blood” (Eph.6:12). We are to fight against false teachers, false doctrines, and anything that blinds the minds of people to see “the light of the Gospel that displays the glory of Christ” (2 Cor.2:4). In Corinth, some false teachers boasted themselves and questioned Paul and his authority.  They waged war against Paul with their series of accusations. Paul refused to use any worldly warfare against them. He understood it was a spiritual war, and “weapons of the world” were useless in the spiritual battle. The devil tries to build invisible castles that make us think we cannot win our battles against him. We need weapons that “have divine power to demolish strongholds.” In Eph.6:17, Paul says the weapon that attacks the devil is “the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.”

In verse 5, Paul says about what he does with the spiritual weapons. First, he destroys every argument and speculations that are against the knowledge of God. As we all know, there are many false and superstitious beliefs, false teachings, worldly philosophies, and theories that oppose the knowledge of God. With the word of God, we need to demolish them. Secondly, Paul writes about confining or controlling all ungodly thoughts and making them obedient to Christ. If we do not make a worldly thought obedient to Christ, it would grow like cancer and enslave us to sin. Here, we see that both actions are in the present tense verb, which signifies that we must continually do them in our daily Christian life. We win our spiritual battles, “not by might nor by power” but by the Spirit of God. Jesus Christ makes us victorious Christians.

APPLICATION: I am a soldier of Jesus Christ. I will not depend on worldly weapons in my fight against the devil’s schemes but will use the armor of God. I will resist the devil and every thought that stand against the knowledge of God. My goal is not to boast of my spiritual gifts and weapons but to bring more people to obedience to Christ.

PRAYER: Father God, thank you for your word that enables me to stand against the devil and his schemes. Jesus, thank you for the victories you have won for me. Holy Spirit, help me to depend on you in every spiritual battle against worldly and sinful thoughts. Amen.
