Day - 143

Deliverance from deadly dangers

READ: 2 Samuel 21, 22; Psalm 142;  John 4: 1 - 26

SCRIPTURE:  2 Samuel 22: 4 “I called to the Lord, who is worthy of praise, and have been saved from my enemies.
5 The waves of death swirled about me; the torrents of destruction overwhelmed me.
6 The cords of the grave coiled around me; the snares of death confronted me.
7 “In my distress I called to the Lord; I called out to my God. From his temple he heard my voice; my cry came to his ears.

OBSERVATION: 2 Samuel 22:1 tells us of the time when David sang this thanksgiving song that we see in the Chapter. He must have written this song after the victories that we see in 2 Samuel 8 and before his sins in the matter of Bathsheba and Uriah (2 Sam.11). 2 Samuel 22 is identical with Psalm 18 with some minor variations. The psalms of David say that he praised God both during the struggles he faced and after the Lord rescued him.

The phrases “the waves of death”, “the torrents of destruction”, “the cords of the grave”, and “the snares of death” explain to us how dreadful his experience was. He would have felt that God gave him miraculous victories and deliverance. David's  secret for his successes was he called out to the Lord during the times of his distress. When a person is constricted by the power of the waves of death, even to say a word could be difficult. When a person is drowning and gasping, and  when he is near to death, could he call upon the Lord? When David called to the Lord during such situations, God heard his voice. God is attentive to such prayers. “Waves of death” may come among us in different ways or forms. How uncertain and hopeless our situation may be, when we pray to God, we can expect a miracle, a deliverance, and a healing.

APPLICATION: God is near to me, and he hears my prayers.  I can pray to him in any situation, anytime and from anywhere. The devil wants me to believe that I cannot pray to God when I am in distress. He often reminds me of my failures, inabilities, and weaknesses to discourage me from praying. The devil may use different persons to tell me his plans, whoever it may be, I will not pay my attention to it. But I will listen to the word of God that says “What is impossible with man is possible with God.” When I am surrounded by life-threatening issues, and when I am worried and in distress, I will pray to God. Even when there is no hope for me, God is my hope. I will trust him and will not hesitate to cry out to him in my distress. He is worthy of my praise.

PRAYER: Father God, you are my savior. Lord, you are my rock whom I can come always. Thank you God for listening to all my prayers. My God, help me to come to you not just in times of need, but always. Amen.

Let us exalt Jesus

READ:  2 Samuel 19, 20; Psalm 141;  John 3: 22-36

SCRIPTURE: John 3: 30 He must become greater; I must become less.

OBSERVATION: John the Baptist was a forerunner of Jesus Christ. People revered him as a prophet. God-fearing Jews wondered that he may be the promised Messiah. Yet, the only purpose of John’s ministry was to “prepare the way for the Lord.” Although he was popular among the people, he was humble to tell people who Jesus really was. Here, we see John’s response to his disciples who saw that Jesus and his disciples also were doing something similar to John’s ministry. When they saw that all people were going to Jesus, possibly they were jealous about it. So they complained to John the Baptist (v.26). However, instead of agreeing with his disciples’ attitude, John joyfully testified Jesus as the Messiah and was happy that people were going to Jesus. Instead of worrying with his disciples about the future, he said my joy “is now complete.”

What  could be the reason for John’s humility and joy in seeing Jesus’ ministry? Was his ascetic life? Or his inability? He had a clear understanding that “A person can receive only what is given them from heaven.” John’s focus was not denying himself in order to be humble. Rather, he gave his full attention to Jesus that “He must become greater.” As Christians, what we do in our life! Are we focused on  increasing our status in society or on lifting up Jesus? Where do we keep Jesus in our life? The place and attention we give to Jesus determine our joy and satisfaction in our life. If we keep our focus on Jesus that “he must become greater,” we will have complete joy in our life.

APPLICATION: John experienced a complete joy in testifying about Jesus. “He must become greater; I must become less” is a good dose for a healthy spiritual life. When I am focused on increasing Jesus, I rejoice in seeing others’ success in life and ministry. John had a unique purpose and call in his life to tell people who Jesus was. I also should not hesitate to give testimony about Jesus. I will exalt Jesus in my life and boldly proclaim to people that Jesus  is “the lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.”

PRAYER: Jesus, I praise you for the wonderful humble life of John the Baptist. Lord, help me to keep my focus on you more than anything else. Holy Spirit, strengthen me to pay my undivided attention to Jesus and to  tell my people about the greatness of the Messiah. You lifted me up from the miry clay. I want to lift you up in my life to give all glory to you.  Amen.

Light vs Darkness

READ: 2 Samuel 17, 18; Psalm 140;  John 3:1-21

SCRIPTURE: John 3:19 This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but people loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil.
20 Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that their deeds will be exposed.
21 But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what they have done has been done in the sight of God.

OBSERVATION: As we see here, the Gospel of John frequently says of the difference between light and darkness. Further, it links light with Jesus Christ. Sometimes, we wonder why many people who agree with the greatness of the Gospel do not come to Christ. The Gospel is certainly not a mystery to comprehend its message. In Jn 3:19, we see a reason for their stubbornness; they love darkness as their deeds are evil. Although “the light shines in the darkness”, they are not ready to understand it. Many people (including some Christians) misunderstand that a life with Christ means a life with so many rules and regulations, do’s and don'ts. They are afraid that their freedom to do things will be affected if they come to Christ. They want to enjoy  their unconstrained  life-style, despite knowing that their deeds are evil. So, when light shines on their life and deeds, they hide themselves in darkness.

On the other hand, whoever or anyone who lives by the truth gladly comes to the light. See the stark contrast between the attitude of people who prefer to live in darkness and people who live by the truth of God. Light reveals the true nature of all deeds, whether it is good or evil. Living in the light of Christ is not a burden, but a pleasurable experience as we can see things clearly as it is. Further, it gives no embarrassment, fear, worries of possible negative outcomes, and shame. Rather, it gives life, joy, and a foretaste of heavenly life, as we enjoy a loving relationship with God. Those who love darkness have already chosen their destiny and condemnation. It is our choice to choose life or death, light or darkness. Our decision to follow Christ brings life to our spiritual life and helps to live in the light of Christ without any fear.

APPLICATION: I love the light and want to live by the truth of God. Jesus is my light who removes all darkness and evil from my life. When I live under the light of God, darkness has no place in my life. Living under the light gives me the confidence that God sees me and my every deed. Unlike the momentary pleasures and eternal troubles that those who do evil deeds experience while they live in darkness, the light of God fills my life with an inexpressible and glorious joy. It is a great blessing, for me and anyone, to live in the light of Christ.

PRAYER: Jesus, you are the light of the world. Your light offers hope for my uncertain life and helps  to see things properly. Lord, help me to love your light and hate darkness. Help me to live by the truth in your light throughout my life. Amen.
