READ: Jonah 1-2; Proverbs 15; Revelation 5
SCRIPTURE: Revelation 5: 9
And they sang a new song, saying: “You are worthy to take the scroll and to
open its seals, because you were slain, and with your blood you purchased for
God persons from every tribe and language and people and nation.
10 You have made them to be a kingdom and priests to serve our God, and they
will reign on the earth.”
OBSERVATION: Singing a new song
to the Lord that praises his salvation and deliverance is a familiar theme in
the book of Psalms. After hearing that “the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the
Root of David” can break the seal and open the scroll that was considered that
no one could break and see what is in it, John saw that the four living
creatures and the twenty-four elders sang the new song. In their new song, we learn
why the lamb of God is “worthy to take the scroll and to open its seals.” In the new song, they
remembered Jesus Christ’s crucifixion and the price he paid on the cross as a
ransom to save all people. The purpose of Jesus’ incarnation was “to give his
life as a ransom for many” (Mk.10:45). Christ’s redemption is the theme of a
new song of every believer. It is the central teaching of the Gospel. Apostle
Peter says that we are redeemed “with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb
without blemish or defect” (1 Peter 1:18, 19). Jesus saves people from “every
tribe and language and people and nation.”
They sang not only what Jesus did for
the salvation of humanity and but expressed our new identity in Christ and the
authority over the earth. Verse 10 confirms what John said at the beginning of
the book; We are made to be priests and kings before God the Father to serve
him (Rev.1:6). When we praise God through our songs, we remember what he has
done to us and who we are in Christ. Rodney Reeves succinctly expresses
the meaning of this song as follows: “His Lordship reveals our discipleship.
His kingdom is our priesthood. His sacrifice is our destiny. The way he
overcame the world is the way we overcome the world, redeeming all creation for
heaven’s purpose.”
In Rev. 5, we
see progressive praise of the lamb of God. First, the elders sang with the four
living creatures. Then among the multitude of angels, they sang it (v.12).
Finally, we see every creature praising God the Father and the Son (v.13). God expressed
his love and will to save all people (Jn 3:16, 1 Tim.2:4). It is a prophecy,
promise, and our belief that “at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in
heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue acknowledge that
Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father” (Is.45:23; Rom.14:11;
Phil.2:10,11). It is our longing and prayer. We all have a role and
responsibility in it.
APPLICATION: Jesus Christ paid
the price for my salvation that no other could ever pay. I am purchased of God.
I am not my own; I belong to Christ. I must honor God in my life and live for
him. He is worthy of all honor and praise. God’s Spirit gives me the strength
to testify and proclaim that Jesus is the Lord.
PRAYER: Father God, thank you for the new song of
praise that you put in my mouth. Jesus, the lamb of God, thank you for your
sacrifice to redeem me. Holy Spirit, help me to live by faith and witness
Christ through my words and deeds. Amen.
