What do we know about tomorrow?

READ: Zechariah 7-8; Proverbs 27; Revelation 17

SCRIPTURE: Proverbs 27: 1 Do not boast about tomorrow, for you do not know what a day may bring.

OBSERVATION: In the present WhatsApp generation, people swiftly move from one thing to another. Technologies and their corresponding demand are changing from time to time. The way people plan for their future also has been changed a lot. We see people boast about themselves based on their plans for the future or past achievements. Though the human understanding about the future is limited, and we have no assurance about it, many people boast about their future by saying how they would be or what their lives would become. The Bible warns us against any form of human pride. Here, the reason for it is given clearly—"for you do not know what a day may bring.” In Luke 16, we read a parable of our Lord Jesus in which we learn about a rich fool who thought he would live for many years. We see a lot of people accumulate more and more wealth and worldly possessions as if they are going to live here forever.  On the other hand, Jesus teaches us to store our treasures in heaven.

Concerning tomorrow, In Matthew 6:25-34, Jesus encourages us not to worry about anything. When life worries burden us, we need to remember Jesus’ words and God’s concerns for us. David sings, “My times are in your hands” (Ps.31:15). God knows our present, past, and future. Our future is in God’s hands! Some misunderstand that the bible is speaking against planning for the future. Instead, the bible encourages us to be humble and express our dependence on God in our lives. James uses a cautious expression, “you ought to say, “If it is the Lord’s will, we will live and do this or that” (James 4:13-16). In Christ, God helps us overcome our past failures and promises a beautiful future fo us. We cannot inherit them by pride, for God opposes the proud. As we walk humbly before God, he gives us his grace and equips us to face the future. Trusting God, we can face anything. When the devil tries to dim our vision about the future, God brightens our eyes to see that he is sovereign and holds the keys for our future. We may not or need not know everything about the future. For it will make our life bored. We know one thing for sure that our future and we are safe in the hands of God.

APPLICATION: When my thoughts prompt me to boast about something, I should never forget God and his words to be humble. When I cast all my anxieties on God, he takes care of me. When I speak about my future, I will speak only what I know about it. Jesus knows everything. I will live and do things as God wills.

PRAYER: Father God, thank you for your wonderful promise for my future. Jesus, strengthen me to believe your words and live accordingly. Holy Spirit, help me to see everything from God’s perspective and live humbly in God’s grace. Amen.
