READ: Lamentations 1,2; Psalms 121; 2 Timothy 3
SCRIPTURE: 2 Timothy 3: 16 All Scripture is
God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in
righteousness,
17 so that the servant of God [Or that you, a man of God] may be thoroughly
equipped for every good work.
OBSERVATION: The Holy Bible is
the most read, studied, and quoted book than any other book of the world. From
Genesis to Revelations, 40 authors who mostly never met each other wrote the 66
books of the Bible over a period of 1500 years. Yet, the continuity and
consistency of the bible are unique. We
can say many such things about the greatness of the bible. The only possible
reason for this uniqueness is that it is God-breathed. Here, Paul refers to “All
Scripture.” Some Christians prefer to read one or more books of the Bible. Some
people do not even attempt to read certain books of the bible. Some think that
when Paul wrote these words, some of the New Testament books had not been written, so
it refers to only the books of the Old Testament. At least two passages refer
to the New Testament writings as scriptures (1 Tim. 5:18; 2 Peter 3:16). “All
scripture” means not only Old Testament books; it refers to every book of the
Bible.
God-breathed Scripture is beneficial for all. Paul writes
about the usefulness of Scripture in four areas: teaching that helps learn more
about God and doctrines, rebuking the sin committed by a believer, Correcting a
person from sin or wrong ways, and training in righteousness refers to living
as a practicing Christian. These four functions of the Word of God are intended
to prepare a man of God to become a mature Christian to apply God’s word in his
life. When God’s word equips us, it enables us to do everything. The benefits
of the Bible motivate us to be read it regularly and apply it in our lives. God’s
word gives us the strength to defeat the enemy, Satan. D.L Moody reminds us, “The
Scriptures were not given for our information, but for our transformation.”
APPLICATION: I should not be a
person who merely listens to the word of God but the one who does what it says
(James 1:22). The Word of God gives me the strength to obey God and live for
him in this world. As a child of God, I should not neglect the blessings that
come from the word of God, for It equips me to do every good work.
PRAYER: Father God, thank
you for your words that help me be a better person in Christ. Lord, help me to read
and listen to your words and obey them accordingly. Open my eyes to see the
wonderful things in your word. Amen.
