Jesus is always the same

READ: Ezekiel 33,33; Psalms 139; Hebrews 13

SCRIPTURE: Hebrews 13: 8 Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.

OBSERVATION: Adapting to a new lifestyle, technology, and current popular trend, people try to identify themselves with the changing world in multiple ways. Something that was popular yesterday is considered as outdated today. However, certain things never change. If they change, that will affect the whole world. In Heb.13:8, we read a timeless truth about Jesus. People, times, technologies, environments, cultures, and fashions may change, but Jesus never changes. The Gospel of Jesus is powerful today as it was 2000 years ago. Jesus said, “Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away” (Mt.24:35). The immutability of Jesus is one of the greatest truths and promises of the Bible.

After writing about the greatness and superiority of Jesus, the author of the book of Hebrews says, “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.” In the context of this verse, we read that all the great heroes of the faith have died; even those who shared God’s word are no more now. But Jesus is the same and alive even today. Then, the author warns people that they should not “be carried away by all kinds of strange teachings” (v.9). People may claim that they have a new revelation of Jesus, a new message to the present world. But the Gospel of Jesus never changes. The Judaizers tried to mislead the Jewish Christians with their false doctrines and teachings. Paul warned the Galatians about the false teachers who preached a different gospel (Gal.1:6-10). The unchanging nature of Jesus and the Gospel is a theological truth that promises that the same Jesus who did miracles and delivered people is actively working with/among us. God never changes (Ps.102:26; Mal.3:6). “The grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of our God endures forever” (Is.40:8). The same Jesus, “who is, and who was, and who is to come,” is with us (Rev.1:4). “Fixing our eyes on Jesus,” let us hold fast our faith.

APPLICATION: Jesus is always with me. Jesus has finished everything required for my salvation. Now he sits at the right hand of God the Father and intercedes for me. “In just a little while,” Jesus will come. Jesus gives me the power to live for him and preach the Gospel. I need to be careful to preach the Gospel always and to all people.

PRAYER: Jesus, thank you for your unwavering love and the words of eternal life. Lord, help me to steadfastly remain in your love and live a life worthy of my call. Amen.
