A life lesson from the Bible

READ: Zechariah 5-7; Proverbs 26; Revelation 16

SCRIPTURE: Proverbs 26: 27 Whoever digs a pit will fall into it; if someone rolls a stone, it will roll back on them.

OBSERVATION: In our competition-filled modern society, some people are ready to do anything to achieve their purposes or targets. Sometimes it hurts us when we see those who excel in deceiving others or those who come to the top by causing others to fall off are considered successful people. We hear many people saying that this world is not meant for good people. Here, the author uses a hunter’s pit as a metaphor to say how the hunter himself is trapped in the pit they dig to catch the animals. Solomon might have remembered the words of his father David’s prayer when he writes these words (Psalm 7:16,17).

It is a common principle that what goes around comes around. Apostle Paul says, “A man reaps what he sows” (Gal.6:7). We can say many real-life stories about how people who tried to harm others are trapped in their own evil plans. The bible also tells us the fate of evil-schemers who were trapped in their own evil plans. Haman’s death on the same gallows he prepared for Mordecai and the killing of Daniel's enemies by lions are familiar stories for us. Like a person who intends evil for others is trapped in his evil plans, a person who blesses others will be blessed. Our Lord Jesus teaches, “So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets” (Mt.7:12). In loving, forgiving others, and giving, Jesus tells us we need to be generous and impartial to be like God the Father (Luke 6:36). We should not follow any worldly plans to improve or achieve in our life. We need to see the example of Christ and should follow him. Worldly plans do not give permanent success but worries and problems. Jesus does not give us “as the world gives” (John 14:27).  Christ gives us eternal joy and His peace. We Christians are called to follow Jesus Christ in every way and remain in him always. Let us remember God’s law of love and make our world a better place for everyone to live.

APPLICATION: Worldly principles for success in life contrast to God’s principles for life. Worldly plans may give temporary success, but remaining in it is very difficult. But Jesus Christ gives me eternal life and victory. I will always follow Christ and remain in him. Holy Spirit reminds me of Christ’s words and teachings and gives me the strength to obey them. God’s lesson for life is the best for me.

PRAYER: Good God, thank you for all your love and mercies that abound on me. Jesus, help me be like you and follow you always and in all places. Holy Spirit, help me overcome evil with good. Amen.
