A call to seek and remember God

READ: Jeremiah 19,20; Psalms 105; Colossians 4

SCRIPTURE: Psalms 105: 4 Look to the Lord and his strength; seek his face always.
5 Remember the wonders he has done, his miracles, and the judgments he pronounced,
6 you his servants, the descendants of Abraham, his chosen ones, the children of Jacob.

OBSERVATION: Internet services have brought dramatic changes in the way people search for things they do not know. With a simple internet search (mostly google search), we can get results for searches on any subject. However, internet searches do not always give accurate results and are not trustworthy as they rely on previous similar searches and the availability of online information. Sometimes we may get wrong and misleading search results. Psalm 105 calls us to seek God by reminding us what God has already accomplished in fulfilling his covenantal promise to Abraham.

We may search for many things, but we find our strength only in God. So, we should continually seek his face. The bible repeatedly invites us to seek God. Our search is usually based on our life needs and priorities. But Jesus calls us to “seek first his (God’s) kingdom and his righteousness” (Mt.6:33). David the psalmist sings, “I sought the Lord, and he answered me; he delivered me from all my fears. Those who look to him are radiant; their faces are never covered with shame. This poor man called, and the Lord heard him; he saved him out of all his troubles” (Ps.34:4-6). Let us examine ourselves:  Do we seek God only when we face troubles in our lives or when we need him? Let us say together with the psalmist, “My heart says of you, “Seek his face!” Your face, Lord, I will seek” (Ps.27:8). Spurgeon says, “This seeking must never cease—the more we know the more we must seek to know.” We can/should always seek the Lord. He is available for us 24/7.

We often forget many things. Forgetfulness increases when we face problems and when we think we have challenges beyond our capacity. At such times, the bible calls us to remember God and remember his past miracles. Verse 8 says, our God is the God who remembers his covenant with Abraham. Psalm 115:12 says, “he Lord remembers us and will bless us.” God says, “I will not forget you” (Is.49:15). Trusting God’s faithfulness in fulfilling his promises, we can remember him always without worrying about our present struggles. We are “the descendants of Abraham, his chosen ones, the children of Jacob.” Therefore, we should seek and remember God always.

APPLICATION: I have no excuses for not seeking God. He has the “fountain of life” (Ps.36:9). The more I seek God, the more I know him. I find him when I seek him with all my heart.

PRAYER: Loving God, thank you for your faithfulness in fulfilling all your promises. Give me the heart to seek your face every day. Amen.
