Is it nonsense to speak of Jesus’ resurrection?

READ: 2 Samuel 5,6; Psalm 134; Luke 24:1-27

SCRIPTURE: Luke 24: 11 But they (Jesus' disciples and others) did not believe the women, because their words seemed to them like nonsense.

OBSERVATION: When the group of women reported about the resurrection of Jesus Christ and their experience at the empty tomb, his disciples and others (possibly a group of men) were not ready to believe their words. It appeared as an utter nonsense for them. These men may have had multiple reasons for not believing the words of the women: Firstly, in those days, people did not give equal value to women’s testimony. Jewish officials did not allow women to be a witness in their court, for they deemed that women were not stable, and unreliable. Secondly, the men who heard the testimony of the women were not expecting Jesus’ resurrection as they reported. Their messianic expectation was different (Lk.24:20,21). Lastly, they forgot what Jesus taught them regarding his death and resurrection. It is interesting to note that women played a crucial role in the ministry of Jesus (Lk.8:3), and were among the first witnesses to spread the news of his resurrection. Moreover, it is important to note that Jesus walked with his disciples and  helped them to remember and to understand the significance of his crucifixion and resurrection for the salvation of humanity. The resurrection of Jesus is an undeniable fact of world history. Many intellectuals who tried to disprove the resurrection of Jesus eventually became the followers of Jesus. The empty tomb speaks even today.

APPLICATION: Jesus’ resurrection from the dead is a central belief in Christianity. My faith in Jesus Christ is not a blind-faith, but built upon a historical fact of his resurrection. The risen Lord is still alive and gives me hope for my life today. He gives me  a vision to see all men and women without any biases. Jesus never rejects a doubting person, but offers his help to understand the truth. I should follow Jesus to brighten the world that is covered by various doubts, fears and darkness.

PRAYER: Jesus, thank you for the confidence and conviction that you give me regarding my faith in you. Lord, give me your strength to be a bold witness to spread the good news of your salvation to all who need it. Amen.
